Burn Boot Camp: Get Burning
Updated: Oct 23, 2019
Note: This post is not sponsored, I'm just obsessed with everything that is Burn Boot Camp. With that, let's continue...
Fact: I've tried about every fitness class under the sun. I don't know about you, but I'm way more likely to work out when I just show up and someone else tells me what to do. Let's be honest, otherwise I would be in the gym for hours before I'd get anything done. Throughout college, I would go through workout phases. Running has always been my go-to (I love me some cardio), but every once and a while I would join a HIIT (high intensity interval training) class like Orange Theory. While these were great resources and definitely showed improvements, I still wasn't entirely sure what this "healthy" thing was all about and could never stick with it.
Fast forward to 4 days before graduation (May 8, 2018) when I got engaged...
I had always imagined being in the "best shape of my life" for my wedding day, but goodness gracious I was far from it when I graduated college. I realized I needed to make some lifestyle changes to really get my booty (quite literally) in gear. Insert: Burn Boot Camp.
I started my two-week free trial with Burn Boot Camp in July of 2018 (a little over two months ago). Naturally, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. After years of hearing my sister rave about the workouts, I decided to drink the Burn Boot Camp Koolaid...and boy was it good. Classes begin with a warm-up to prepare your muscles for the main workout to come. Now, don't be fooled. Just because it's a "warm up," doesn't mean it's easy. While the classes are challenging, they're 100% doable and there are people of all ages and walks of life right there next to you, cheering you on. Pro Tip: If you like high-fives, you'll fit right in.
Once you're done with the warm-up, your trainer will give you the run down on what the main part of class will look like. Don't worry, he/she will show everyone how to do each exercise. Here's the kicker: while the trainer demonstrates the exercises, everyone in the class completes body weight squats, jumping jacks, etc. depending on what the trainer tells you so that you always stay moving throughout the 45 minutes of class. During the class, your trainer is constantly encouraging you and those around you, all while making sure that your form looks good and you aren't doing anything to create injury (can I get a hallelujah?). After the main portion of class, you'll participate in what's called a "finisher," which is often 3-4 minutes long and completes the last leg of the class.
Here's a sample of what a week at Burn Boot Camp looks like:
Let's talk about food...
One of the biggest things that sets Burn Boot Camp apart is its focus on nutrition. While showing up to classes will build strength and encourage weight loss, maintaining a well-balanced diet with good sources of protein, fats, etc. is what makes all the difference. Warning: This part is probably the most difficult and no one is perfect, but the Burn trainers are highly intelligent on all things nutrition and will teach you everything you need to know in a focus meeting (or several). You can schedule focus meetings with any of your Burn trainers and discuss your goals, nutrition, or whatever your heart desires.
Everyone will tell you about the amazing community that Burn has to offer. But within my first few weeks attending Burn, I really saw this come into play. I regularly attend the 5:30 am class (call me crazy, but I found myself loving it) and I had woken up before class to a low blood sugar. Anxious to reach my fitness goals, I grabbed an Honest Kids pouch (or two) and headed to Burn once my sugars began to go up. For whatever reason, my sugars dropped again before class started and I had to sit out of the first 10 minutes of class. I was so bummed! I mean, I had woken up at 5 am for this, after all. Instead of staring and judging me for sitting out during class to drink a juice box (let's be honest, it's a weird sight to see for an adult), two women from my class who had noticed my pod on my arm came over to me. Both of them stopped their workouts (which they had also woken up early for) to come over and make sure that I was ok. THAT, my friends, is what a community is all about. And it still gives me chill bumps to this day.
Between the amazing workouts, the overwhelmingly supportive community, and the focus and education about good nutritional practices, it's truly hard NOT to love Burn. I mean, seriously, there's a reason why everyone you talk to is HOOKED (including myself). After a few weeks at Burn, I was already seeing some serious results and had forgotten that I started to get in shape for my wedding. It's about so much more than that and has now become a permanent part of my life.
Go drink the Burn Boot Camp Koolaid. You'll love every drop.
